Volcanoes

La Cordillera Volcánica de Guanacaste is a volcanic mountain system located in the northwestern side of Costa Rica. It extends for 70 km length, separating the provinces of Guanacaste and Alajuela. The most known volcanoes are Orosí, Rincón de la Vieja, Miravalles, Tenorio and Arenal.

  • Tenorio Volcano: The National Park Volcan Tenorio is where you can find the impressive turquoise waters of Río Celeste. It’s been chosen among the 10 most beautiful rivers on the planet, it is a perfect choice for nature lovers and wildlife observers.
  • Rincón de la Vieja National Park: It is the volcano and the most visited national park of Guanacaste Conservation Area. It is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Located just 26 km from the city of Liberia, it is an ideal place to enjoy different adventures in nature, such as hiking, rafting, canopy, horseback riding or tubing, among many others. Also, place for rest, silence and thermal baths in the middle of the forest.
  • Miravalles Volcano: It is the highest in the Cordillera Volcánica de Guanacaste. Miravalles is also the energy engine of Guanacaste, due to the electricity production based on geothermal energy. In this area, there are several centers of thermal pools and you can visit sources where volcanic mud emerges to the surface.
  • Arenal Volcano: The majestic Arenal Volcano located in La Fortuna de San Carlos has an almost perfect cone of 1,633 meters high. The park is visited by thousands of tourists who come every year in search of accommodation, hot springs and strategic points to observe the volcanic activity and the abundant fauna that lives in the rain forest.
